Whilst designing the album cover for Mick Cooke's "Down at the Zoo" I came up with an alternative style using a more hand-crafted and elegant approach.
Using watercolours I created a bold, colourful, and striking cover, executed with a lighter touch.
Although the other cover I made was chosen, I think it is still worth exhibiting this one.

Martin's birthday was coming up, and what better way to celebrate than with a card (original, yes?). So in a fit of creativity I took the watercolours out and began. My craftiness could not be contained and it was so that a pretty bow was constructed out of card to adorn the envelope.

Jigsaw of my dreams.

On a recent trip back home I found and old jigsaw that my grandmother gave me for one of my birthdays when I was little. Even as a young thing I wanted to gobble up this picture. I love it so much. I remember losing that one piece of jigsaw. Who knows where it is..maybe it's made it's way back to HK.
I don't know who illustrated it and it was too long ago to do detective work. It was either bought in Hong Kong or Japan and that's all I know.

In a bid to create more work my friend, Beth Carson, and I have set up a whole new blog for a drawing project!
In this we create a piece of art on a piece of card the same size as a trading card and post it to each other every Tuesday. Come Wednesday we receive our post. This is not a new phenomenon. It has come from USA and is called ATC (Artists Trading Cards). Much like those pannini sticker books you get... Collect them all!

Hiroshima 2010

The good people of the distinguished Hiroshima Animation Festival have sent me a surprise package in the post. In it I received a certificate for having my film, Everybody, screened in the festival and a brochure of what went on there too.
I have only once been to the festival in 2008 and it was a blast, I am sad that I did not go again this year, but hopefully for the next one (in 2012) I will have another film made so that I can have the opportunity to attend again.

A bunch of us were hired by Figtree Network to create "doodle" portraits for an HTC event in September 2010.

Although most of our efforts were given away to their dopplegangers I managed to salvage an actual doodle that was a group effort whilst we were waiting for instructions.

Last Wednesday was my final printing class. This time we learned about lino prints. This is my second ever lino cut in my life. The last one I did was in 2nd year in school... oh about 15 years ago.
In keeping with my animal theme I printed a fox. He is sleeping on a rug, under the stars.

And on the third day we did Drypoint

This laborious task of Drypoint took us 3 hours (well we were learning). You get your bit of metal, scratch in your picture; File down the edges of your plate; pre-soak your paper; Ink your plate, and then wipe the ink off; Prepare your press and eventually print.

Scratching in your picture is a bit daunting. For one, you have to think of something, then you hope that it's good enough to bother going through the rest of the stages and then the scratching of the metal makes your teeth go funny (think fork on plate...yow!).

But it was worth it to see my little picture come out and to get to spin the printing wheel.

HURRAH! See my efforts below.

Well, I have been attending a printing class at East London Printmakers off Mare Street.
The teacher there is Nick Morley, a very talented printer. The classes are loads of fun and we are learning a lot.
The first week we did stencil screen prints, the second week we worked from photos or drawings and created those photo-exposure screen prints. Last night we did dry point, which was lots of fun.
Looking forward to the next class where we get to play with acid!

Anyway, here is a piece that I did of my cat on the second week. It came out really well.

Thought I would burst from all the deliciousness I encountered at the PICK ME UP, the contemporary art fair. Surrounded by lush prints I was delighted to see printing in progress, visit the Peepshow Collective and No Brow stands, see Rob Ryan at work and purchase an amazing print. Couldn't help myself, a voice in my head told me that it would appreciate in value and that I should get it "Get it, you won't regret it, what's the point of living if you are not surrounded by beauty, BEAUTY!!!" (it's all on my credit card, so I can think about that later).

So, for now, I wait for it to be delivered in great anticipation. Until then I will look at my bare wall and imagine.

Green Patriot posters! AHOY!!

So Green Patriot Posters have the right idea. Make lovely, fun posters for people to see and then get published (if you're picked) in their very green book. YES!

It is, however, US based, so they need to keep the message universal. But, hey, about time America started sorting out its massive energy consumption, right?

I had some posters that I made for Climate Camp last night (which never made it through the final selection process) and decided to put them to good use and enter them. I have also just knocked out another poster today which I am quite proud of, called "Light Relief".

Once you submit your poster it gets rated from 1-5. Please look out for my posters and give them a rating. I would be very grateful.

It's a small effort towards climate change, but a step in the right direction.

Hello,
I have actually done some new work, but it's for a competition for Pica Pica Magazine and can't really put it up.
In the meantime I dropped into Cowling & Wilcox to pick up some supplies, paper, ink, watercolours and then got some yummy lunch from the deli (enough for 2 meals, so actually more economical!). It is a beautiful sunny day here in London so I also got a lovely warm cycle from my little jaunt away from the studio, roll on summer!

Over the weekend our solar panels were installed on our roof. Can you imagine! It's like the future! The cat is pretty traumatised by the builders and is currently sulking, but we try to explain to her that it's all worth it.
I cannot take credit as it was all Alasdair's (author of The Mushy Pea) idea, grit, determination and cash; I just get to reap the benefits. Free electricity! Hurrah!

AND... the scaffolding is still up so we can climb up at night (when the builders have gone away and can't tell us off) and perch up on the roof and enjoy the cool night.

Right, so I have started drawing. I just sat with some ink and paints and got into it and this is what came out.

It doesn't have too much to do with my film, yet, but I needed to just sit and let the thoughts flow. Why it's all focused on moustaches I cannot tell you, but hopefully that will all reveal itself in time, kind of like the tv series "Lost".

The new film

Okay, I am going to make a new film. Totally and utterly inspired by Emma Lazenby of BAFTA fame, I am going to do it. I mean, why not? I have been thinking about it and doodling over it and I have time so I should just get on with it! Pull the finger out! Get a move on! Stop procrastinating!

So, it starts here. I am going to make a film, off my own back (if funding comes along then great) and make the film of my dreams (or thereabouts). Following in Emma's fab footsteps I am going to blog my progress, vent my frustrations and ask you, dear reader to keep me going and watch my efforts.

I have already done an animation test. I have been animating in Photoshop. Not as easy or as intuitive as Flash, but still alright. In fact, it is brilliant. Adobe have done well, but there are some tools I wish they had.

I have a title for it, but my ideas are still hazy. I know how it begins, but not sure on the middle or end. There are bits and pieces I want in it, but I haven't committed a script to paper yet. I know what the theme is going to be and I want to have a sort of thread going through it that relates to Alice in Wonderland. Is this idea a bit twee and used?

I'll figure it out. I will. And you can witness this endeavor, right here on this blog.

Emma Lazenby

AMAZING! Emma Lazenby received a BAFTA last night for her short animated film, "Mother of Many". I've only seen a clip of it but it does look gorgeous. Well done Emma!
I don't know her very well, but we did meet in 2006 when she helped us with our film "Measles". We had lots of fun for those crazy 3 weeks. She is a super genius and I am so proud of her. She has inspired me to pick up my pencil and that old idea and start to actually make it. Well done on the BAFTA love!

Nick Morley inspired me

Met the super Nick Morley yesterday. I bought one of his prints and was lucky enough to meet him and share a cup of tea. He is with the East London Printmakers in Hackney and does lino cuts, screen prints and lots more things. If you go to the site you will see that he (and others) hold workshops. Something I am definitely interested in.

Have been totally inspired to make more art... wonder if that will actually happen.

Right, am off now, but might be back in a minute with more things to tell. This blogging is a bit addictive! Think I must have a backlog... Or backblog... HA! get it? BACKBLOG.
